Signs Your Child Is Ready to Transition from Crib to Bed
The transition from sleeping in a baby crib to a big bed can be a momentous occasion for any child. This marks the time that your baby or toddler becomes an independent child. It’s important to recognize the signs that your child is ready for this transition. Some include:
- Crib Climber: Some toddlers begin to climb out of their crib when they are beginning to show their readiness for a bed of their own. There are safety issues that can arise when a child begins to climb in and out of their crib on their own. It may be best to begin the transition at this time.
- New Family Addition: Sometimes, the need to move your child into a bed of his or her own has more to do with practical reasons, such as a new addition to the family. When you are expecting another child, it’s best to begin the transition slowly over the course of a couple of months. You can help your child to feel included in the decision by letting him or her pick out the bed. Your child can choose a bed that looks like a car or a castle, as well as a variety of other fun bed types, which help to make the experience exciting.
- Growing Up: As a child grows from being a baby to a toddler, he or she may not fit in the baby crib anymore. This is a sign that you should make the move from a crib to a bed. Every child develops physically at different rates, so there is no set age when this may occur. There are special beds that have bars to prevent your child form falling out if he or she is still very young but physically big enough for a kid bed.
