Babies and Furniture: Safety Do's and Don'ts
Your baby relies on you to keep him or her safe and protected. When baby-proofing your home, consider, what you'll need to do to keep your nursery furniture safe. Here are a few safety dos and don'ts to remember in the nursery.
Do Read Directions:
It’s essential that you put your baby's furniture together properly. The directions will give you step-by-step instructions so you won't overlook something that could lead to injuries or even death. Keep those directions handy so you can refer back to them as your baby grows, particularly as you adjust the crib.
Don't Leave Your Baby Unattended:
Though changing tables have small rails, you should never leave your baby unattended. A fall from a changing table or crib could be devastating to your little one, so don't walk away, even just a few steps, if your child is on the table or if the crib side is down. Always raise the crib side rail if you need to walk away, or better yet, purchase a new crib with stationary rails that meets current safety protocols.
Do Cover Sharp Edges:
Furniture bumpers are necessary to prevent cuts and bruises if your child crawls or walks into the edges and corners of the furniture. Use foam padding to cover fireplace edges, tables, and countertops, too. Try getting down on your baby's level to check for sharp edges you might otherwise overlook.
Don't Forget to Secure Furniture:
Your baby's heavy nursery furniture, such as dressers, bookcases, and armoires, will come with brackets to attach them to the wall. Use them. Heavy furniture can cause death to infants if it falls.
